Alright, I’ve been looking at the Alpine A290, and I’ve got mixed feelings. On the one hand, it’s undeniably a good-looking car. The way the wheels sit perfectly in the arches, the proper performance brake calipers, and the interior, it’s stunning. The materials look top-notch, and it feels like a proper hot hatch in terms of styling and vibe. Definitely special in a way that some other cars (cough X Power cough) might not quite hit.
But here’s the rub, it’s not really that quick, is it? I mean, 220bhp and 0-60 in 6.4 seconds? It’s decent, sure, but for something that looks this sporty, I expected more. It feels like it’s got a lot of bark but not much bite to back it up.
And then there’s the price. You just know it’s going to be sky-high, which makes me think... is it worth it? When you look at performance per pound, the MG4 X Power is still hard to beat. It may not have the same “wow” factor in the looks department, but it delivers where it counts, and for a lot less.
Still, I can’t help but keep an eye on what’s coming next. The rumored BYD hot hatch sounds intriguing, and I’m curious about what the 2025 X Power facelift might bring. Anyone else been eyeing the A290?
